The Queenship of Mary!

Hi! This is John Nemmer again. I would like to talk with you about the Queenship of Mary. The Church celebrates it on August 22. Pope Saint Pius VI declared this holy feast in 1954; however, Mary’s Queenship has roots in the bible. When St. Gabriel came to Mary he said that her son will receive the throne of David and reign without end. Due for the fact that Mary fully pleased God and let His Will for her be done all her life, God raised her up, body and soul after her earthly life was over and crowned her as the queen of Heaven and Earth.

In the 4th century Saint Ephrem used to call Mary “Queen” and “Lady.” Later on the Early Church Fathers continued to call our Blessed Mother those names. People started to sing hymns of Mary’s Queenship in the 11th century.

The feast follows up from the feast of the Assumption, and is now celebrated on the same day as that feast. Pope St. Pius VI once said that Mary deserves the title because she is the mother of God. Mary is closely associated as the New Eve with Jesus’ redemptive works.

Let us be thankful to Jesus for giving us Mary as our queen and mother in Heaven. May the peace and joy of our Lord Jesus Christ, the help of the Holy Spirit, and the glory of God the Father be always with you all! Amen.
